The original St. Martin's Cross at the Isle of Iona is 17 ft high. The symbolism of a central boss with four more around it, may be an 8c. depiction of God and creation. The faith that St. Columba 6c brought to Iona saw God in the world around us, hence the nature based interlacing pattern on the shaft. St. Martin was the national hero of the Franks.
