This piece is based on Rupert the Bear which was a favorite comic book unassuming 'hero' popular in the 1950's & 1960's.
Rupert was the creation of Mary Tourel, the artist wife of a Daily Express editor who lived in Canterbury.  Created to grab sales from the Daily Mail and Mirror in November 1920, it ran daily in the Express and captured the heart of millions.  The Punch illustrator, Alfred Bestell took over from Mary on her retirement in 1935, and developed the superb illustrative style that characterizes the books.  He Continued to illustrate the Annuals in to his 90's.
